While reading these chapters, I got more and more suspicious about Berger. What's up with her? I don't know if she's good or not.
In Chapter 10: I just got weirded out with Bjurman. His meetings with Salander are so inappropriate to her, but I know that he's only doing it so that he can have sex with her or something.
In Chapter 11: I think that the date book should've gave the next "task" for Blomkvist. I think he should visit all the people mentioned. I don't understand his relationship with Cecilia.
In Chapter 12: I'm pretty excited to see how Salander is going to get back at Bjurman. Her "bad ass-ness" is about to come out! Anyone know why she got the tattoo of a dragon or it is just there because she likes it?
I think that she might try and hurt him really bad when he does not expect it, like hide in his office or something.
The parts about Lisbeth i find disturbing. Her guardian is using her as a prostitute and she plays along just so he won't screw her over and send her to a correctional facility. When she gets back at him, it will be most likely severe like what Sri said, judging from her character.
ReplyDeleteBerger is definitely good, she has had a long standing relationship with Blomkvisk and has worked hard to build up The Millennium. She is doing what she thinks is best for the company, and also trying to get Mikael back too.
As for Cecilia, that was strange. I did not see that coming. She seems suspicious, the way she won't talk about what happened and doesn't want to answer questions, then all of the sudden she comes on to Mikael. She has some other hidden motive.
In my opinion, the story is just picking up. The chapters we just read were really interesting, although disturbing at parts.
ReplyDeleteSri, for your question on the dragon tattoo. I think it kind of symbolizes Lisbeth's character. She has a fierce personality and always wants to fight back as she believe in revenge (237). She has basically depended on herself her entire life and and has a strong character. I am also curious to find out how she will get back at Bjurman. Also, I want to know what was "All The Evil" that happened to her in the past (230). It is obviously because she doesn't want to talk to about it. I think that an incident probably occurred in which she injured another person in a fight or something. What do you guys think?
After Joe pointed out his suspicions about Cecilia, I have also begun to wonder about her. She has definitely become nicer towards Blomkvist. She might have planned something with someone else, and wants to get close to him for her own benefits.
I looked up the "All the Evil" thing to see if I could find something about it and it's explained in the next book!
ReplyDeleteAlso, just a side note, isn't is crazy that the author died a few years ago?!
I don't necessarily agree that Cecilia has a bad motive in the way that she's been acting. Like she told Blomkvist she's lived with Harriet's murder her entire adult life (231). She must be tired from hearing about her death and just wants to live her life. She also acknowledged that she's getting older, so why shouldn't she enjoy her life?
ReplyDeleteAs for all of the sexual encounters in chapters 11 & 12, I find it odd that the author transitions directly from a rape scene to one of consensual sex (page 220 and again on 230). I feel like that made Salanders situation seem even more gruesome, but at the same time I found Blomkvist and Cicilias encounter a bit gross after. I don't know if all of this was intended or not, but the layout I feel was on purpose. Does anyone agree?
I'm not saying Cecilia is bad, she just has an ulterior motive. I do think it was purposely planned to have all the sex happen at once. It augments Lisbeth's situation, like Emma said. I also agree that the Blomkvisk and Cecilia thing was gross, and I hope it does not continue. I hate to term it this, but it was "old people intercourse."
ReplyDeleteI also looked up Steig Larsson. He died of a heart attack. During his life, he was very similar to Blomkvisk. He was a journalist on the side in addition to writing. He wrote about and exposed the extreme-right and racist groups in Sweden. He came under fire for that, and reportedly received many death threats. He was also a Communist/Socialist, that was interesting. All this comes courtesy of wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stieg_Larsson
I agree with Joe I am very suspicious of Cecilia I think she knows more than she lets on and i am very curious about the "interview" to come between Blomkvisk and Cecilia.
ReplyDeleteAlso im also interested in Salanders early childhood they mention what she is like in elementary school but i want to know more about her home life and what made her the way she is. I also was interested in "all the evil" they first mentioned it in like chapter nine and now that you said we dont get to it until the next book kind of discourages me because i really want to know more about salander. Also when she was considering what to do about the whole scene with Bjurman i thought she just should have went to Armansky. But instead she just wants to take care of it herself. which i think is going to be B.A in future chapters but like Palmgren had drilled into her head her actions have consequences and she frequently refers to this and yet she still plans to exact revenge i thought that was interesting.
Also i dont understand why you are suspicious of Berger i dont think she is bad at all.
Also i think we should increase the chapters we are going to read because like Sandy said the book is getting really good and also everyone wants to watch the movie after we had read the book.
I don't think that the idea that her actions have consequences will ever stop her from getting revenge. I just think it helps her to take the situation more seriously and make sure it works out the way she would imagine.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we should increase the amount of reading so well all be on the same page for the movie(s).
Agreed. The book is finally picking up and all the events are getting so intense. I really can't wait to see what Salander does to get back at Bjurman. And Joe, I looked it up on Wikipedia too, and that's crazy. Does anyone think that he based Blomkvisk was based on Larsson?
ReplyDeleteI can change the reading schedule a little if everyone agrees to increase the pages to read. Sound good?
ReplyDeleteJess, I personally don't think it would have been a good idea for Salander to go to Armansky for help. He definitely would help her out in any way possible. However, I feel like he's way too overly possessive of Salander. He admitted that he felt like he was sort of a fatherly figure for her and was always keeping an eye out for her (47). Therefore, he might over react and do something that he might regret. Also, Salander isn't the type to go asking for help from other people. Her choice of working alone better establishes her character.
And I agree with Emma on the whole revenge idea. Salander definitely give more thought when deciding her actions because of the influence of Palmgren, which shows that Palmgren was able to get through to her in a way.
