Blomkvist: The Player

I wanted to talk a little about the relationships that Blomkvist has sprouted so far. Sex is a prominent component of TGWTDT, and however awkward it may be to discuss it, I felt it only natural to evaluate the sex life and romantic interests of Blomkvist. Firstly, I would like to propose a question: To what degree do you think that Blomkvist cares abouts the women he sleeps with? I think we can agree that Blomkvist is certainly a lady's man, but his connections with women are fascinating. Berger's status as a bestfriend-with-benefits, for example, provides a little insight into Blomkvist as a lover. While he seems to be fairly obsessed with her during his first few weeks with Vanger, he is quick to find solace in the voluptuous breasts of Cecilia Vanger. He never ceases to call Berger but then is disappointed when Cecilia turns him away after prison. Do you all think he is a pig that just tries to hook up? Or do you think there is something deeper and he should run off with Mitt Romney to start a polygamist cult? Let's evaluate together!

  1. I think he truly does care for Burger because those two always seem to go back to each other. they said in earlier chapters that they have a chemistry that brings them together. And i am actually really confused by Blomkvist sexual relationship with Cecilia. I dont know if he cares for her but i think it is quite obvious that cecilia cares for him. I think he might just want cecilia sexually but if that were true then he would have told vanger about the picture of cecilia opening the window. and he has become a little bias in the investigation now because of his sexual relationship. But from what i can see Blomkvist probably does like both Burger and Cecilia and its just a plus that he has a sexual relationship with them. also i dont see Blomkvist as a player it doesnt really seem to fit his character.

  2. He should go start a cult with Romney.

Seriously, I am in agreement with Jess. He does genuinely care for Berger. That relationship has been going on for so long (if you recall is started during his marriage). It's screwy that Berger's husband just lets him do it though. To most people, that would anger them... a lot. Cecilia has something for him, because she is torn by her feelings, but being so emotionally damaged she can't seem to accept another man into her life and trust him. I can't say for sure if he has strong feelings for Cecilia, he surly has some feelings though, as he protects her by not telling Vanger about her being in the window.
Overall, he's not a player, just a man with one or two love interests. His character is one that fights for the truth and reading 16-18 he has morals (376).

  3. Blomkvist definitely is not a player. I personally think that he does not think too much about what he is doing in his relationships. He is so free spirited. If he likes a girl, then he'll go for it. I think that's why him and Berger gets along so well. They both have that concept in their minds. They don't think there is anything wrong in what they are doing and they don't care if other people know. They care about each other and are really good friends. They both wanted a sexual relationship too so it does not make him a player. Also, it's not like he had any intentions of having a relationship with Cecilia, it just happened. He did develop feelings for her, and he does stay loyal.
I really like his character. He's interesting.

  4. I agree that Blomkvist is not the "pig" that Adrian alluded to. I think he genuinely cares for the girls he has relationships with. For example, Blomkvist was there for Salander when her mother past away. He went to her ceremony and he was one of the three people that actually showed. He also understood that Salander needed space and was respectful of that. Additionally, when Blomkvist believed Cecilia was the girl in the photograph by the window, he realized that she was a suspect. Nevertheless, he did not tell Vanger or Frode about it because he did not want her to be accused, which showed he had feelings for her.
