Tying Up Loose Ends

1. Did you think that this quote, "You conned me...Henrik is an old shark. He was telling me what I wanted to hear" (516). Do you think it was fair for Venger to do this? Personally, I think that although Henrik did not expect the Blomkvist to have solved the Harriet case, he still should not have given him worthless information that happened thirty plus years ago.

2. In your own opinion, do you think that the Venger family was as bad as Henrik described them to be when he accused his family of killing Harriet? (92).

3. Do you think the last scene, where Salander spots Blomkvist and Berger together, killed all the trust and feelings that she build up for him throughout the course of the novel? Personally, I think the last scene did have a big effect on Salander and Blomkvists's relationship. She probably thought she got her hopes up for nothing.

  1. I think that Henrik's conning of Blomkvist confirms the suspicion that I had in the beginning of the book. He came to Blomkvist under a false pretense. He never planned to incriminate Wereneneenstrum, and to add insult to injury, he doesn't allow Blomkvist to publish the story about Harriet under threat of financially collapsing the Millenium. This makes what he did sneaky and terribly dishonest.

I think the Vanger family was twisted. They are the epitome of dysfunctional as well as involved heavily in immoral activities.

I think more than Salander's trust and feeling in blomkvist was destroyed. Her trust and feeling in humanity was broken. She viewed Blomkvist as one of the only worthwhile people in the world. When he sees her with Berger, her faith in the world is shaken, and any sympathy for other humans might as well be gone.

  2. I agree with Adrian about the last two questions but not with the first one. I think Adrian is making Vanger sound worse than he is. In my opinion, I don't think he ever intended on conning Blomkvist. He utilized his skills and power to get Blomkvist to work on the case he has been investigating for decades. As Brett said, he never thought for Blomkvist to find Harriet. It was just his obsession that drove him to force Blomkvist to get involved. Therefore, he was expecting to have an equal exchange by the end of the year. Blomkvist would get his information as useless as it would be, and money in compensation for his time and dedication. Vanger would probably get closure from the case. Vanger also would have never expected Martin to have done such awful crimes. He knew his family was selfish and unbearable, but did not think it was going to be that bad. He then could not risk seeing the fall of his corporation. Although what he did at the end was unjust, Vanger did not plan it from the beginning.
